Doctoral School of Humanities

Masters’ School Seminar 26.05.2021 3 p.m.

The next Masters’ School Seminar will be held on May 26, 3 p.m.

Our guest is professor Sven Dupré, Director of the Research Institute for History and Art History of History of Art, and Professor of History of Art, Science and Technology at Utrecht University (History & Art History) and the University of Amsterdam (Conservation & Restoration), a member of the Descartes Centre for the History and Philosophy of the Sciences and the Humanities at Utrecht University, active member of many scientific societies, collaborator of numerous scientific institutions, member of the editorial boards of various scientific journals.

Sven Dupré’s research is at the crossroads of art history and the history of science and technology. He is actively involved in research in technical art history, using his knowledge in the field of restoration and preservation of art objects.

Sven Dupré has published on a wide range of topics on the history of art, science and technology. The outcomes of his research are many books (recently: Reconstruction, Replication and Re-enactment in the Humanities and Social Sciences  published in 2020) and articles published in numerous journals across disciplines, including Studies in History and Philosophy of Science, Isis, Netherlands Yearbook for Art History, History of Humanities, Synthese, Paragrana: Internationale Zeitschrift für Historische Anthropologie and Intellectual History Review.

A consequence of his research interests was the project (completed in 2017) Creating a Knowledge Society in a Globalizing World, 1450-1800, that investigates the historical roots of knowledge societies. Currently, he is developing some new ideas in the project  Art DATIS – Integration and Improvement of Sources on Glass for a Sustainable Future. The project focuses on the questions of how historical sources were used to innovate glass production and education in the twentieth century, and how we can efficiently link the enormous amount of newly digitized art technical sources on artistic glass production, such as object documentation, technical texts, images, and research data.

The subject of the project is related to the ‘Glass: A Material in the History of Knowledge‘ lecture.  After the presentation, as always, there will be time for discussion.
