ADMISSION RULES

FORM OF QUALIFICATION PROCEEDINGS

 

Proceedings consists of two stages, and they include:

  1. stage: assessment of the research project and candidate’s scientific activity;
  2. stage: interview.

 

POINTS TO BE AWARDED

 

During the proceedings the candidate can gain 100 points in total: 60 points from the 1st stage and 40 points from the 2nd stage. To qualify to the 2nd stage, candidate has to gain at least half of the points possible to be awarded at the 1st stage (i.e., 30 points). To be recommended for admission to the School, candidate has to gain at least half of the points possible to be awarded at the 2nd stage (i.e., 20 points).

 

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS – CONTENT OF THE APPLICATION

 

To take part in the qualification proceedings, each candidate has to create an account in Internet Recruitment for Candidates System (Online Application System; in Polish: Internetowa Rejestracja Kandydatów, IRK). The candidate submits a School admission application only through the IRK [LINK], which includes the following:

 

BASIC INFORMATION

 

It boils down to: indication of the selected discipline in which the candidate plans to pursue education, PESEL number or passport number, nationality, contact information (residence address, e-mail address, telephone number), information whether the candidate agrees to receive administrative decisions by means of electronic communication, consent for processing of personal data for the purposes of the admissions procedure. We require also a photograph of a candidate’s face that allows for their identification.

 

GRADUATION DIPLOMA OR OTHER DOCUMENT CONFIRMING MEETING THE RULES’ CONDITION

 

The candidate has to upload (via IRK system) a scan of the graduation diploma of long-cycle Master’s degree or postgraduate studies or an equivalent diploma obtained under separate regulations. If the candidate pursued education in the European Higher Education Area (EHEA members can be found here: LINK), they have to upload a certificate of holding a master’s degree or a statement that the diploma or certificate confirming the award of a master’s degree will be delivered by the 20th September 2023. In case the diploma was issued in a language other than Polish or English, the candidate shall attach its certified translation.

 

DESCRIPTION OF THE PRELIMINARY RESEARCH PROJECT PROPOSAL WITH A TITLE

 

Description with a title cannot be longer than 6,000 characters including spaces. A summary of the research project can be up to 1,000 characters including spaces. The description includes bibliography relevant for the research objective, which is not included in the character limit.

 

RESUME OR CV

 

A resume or CV has to outline the candidate’s scientific activity, including scholarly interests and achievements during the five calendar years preceding the
application. If a candidate became a parent during this time, as evidenced by a scan of the child’s birth certificate attached to the application, this period is  extended by two years for each child.

 

SCANNED DOCUMENTS CONFIRMING SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITY MENTIONED IN RESUME OR CV

 

Each scientific activity has to be confirmed by the means of scanned documents. In case of materials confirming the scientific activity indicated in the resume or CV and regarding scientific publications – no more than two full scans of the candidate’s articles or sections in collective works can be attached (deemed the most important by the candidate). The remaining candidate’s publications are confirmed with scans of title pages.

 

DECLARATION CONFIRMING AT LEAST B2 LEVEL FLUENCY IN ENGLISH

 

Please bear in mind that we require English declaration only, and no other language can be an equivalent in that case. For further information, please check here (LINK – FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS section, question 4 and 5).

 

SCAN OF A DECLARATION BY THE PLANNED SUPERVISOR

 

The declaration confirms planned supervisor’s agreement to undertake the specific duties. The document contains also the number of doctoral students, for whom they perform the duties as a designated supervisor. Template of the declaration can be found here, page 35 (LINK). The candidate may also attach a scan of their planned supervisor’s opinion and opinions of other academics. Opinions may be about the candidate and their scientific activity or proposed research project.

 

DECLARATION CONFIRMING WHETHER THE CANDIDATE WAS OR IS A DOCTORAL STUDENT

 

What we mean is a declaration confirming whether the candidate was or is a doctoral student or a participant of doctoral studies or whether they have initiated a doctoral dissertation process or whether proceedings to award them a doctoral degree have been initiated. If the answer is “yes”, the candidate has to attach the title of their doctoral dissertation or the research project prepared by a candidate, including the name and last name ofthe candidate’s tutor or supervisor.

 

A DECLARATION CONFIRMING THAT CANDIDATE HAS REVIEWED THE RULES OF ADMISSION

 

The candidate has to submit a declaration confirming that they have reviewed the Rules of admission to doctoral schools at the University of Warsaw and articles 40 and 41 of the Code of Administrative Procedure.

 

ADMISSION PROCEDURE FEE

 

The rate of the admission procedure fee amounts 200,00 PLN (see LEGAL ACTS section in the main post). Candidates have to pay a fee in the prescribed time if they want to become qualified to the 1st stage of proceedings.

 

LANGUAGE OF QUALIFICATION PROCEEDINGS

 

The interview is held in Polish with elements of English or entirely in English. The candidate tells their preference concerning that matter in the IRK system.
